Hydroelectricity, the main source of renewable energy in France

Principle

Hydroelectric power is a renewable source of electricity obtained by the conversion of hydraulic energy from the different sources of flowing water (rivers, waterfalls, marine currents, tides, waves etc,). The kinetic energy of the flowing water is transformed by a turbine into mechanical energy and then, by an alternator, into electricity.

A small hydroelectric plant is defined as an electricity-producing plant, with a production of less than 10 MW. There are 1700 small hydroelectric plants in France, 1400 of which are owned by private producers of electricity. They are classified according to the amount of installed power :

The two essential factors to the recuperation of the available energy are the height of the drop and the water’s rate of flow.
